Authorities Sound The Alarm Over Reckless Use Of E-Scooters And E-Bikes

May 19, 2026

(Storm Lake)– Authorities are warning of the dangers of young kids operating e-scooters and e-bikes after an accident late last week in Storm Lake.

Police say a child on a scooter was injured after failing to stop at a stop sign and collided with an oncoming vehicle. The child sustained only minor injuries, but police say the outcome could have been much worse.

Police say e-scooters and e-bikes fall under Iowa’s bicycle laws and general traffic control rules, meaning they must follow rules of the road. State law also limits low-speed e-bikes to motors under 750 watts and motor-assisted speeds under 20 mph on bike paths and allows them anywhere traditional bicycles are permitted.

Authorities urge parents to talk to their kids about responsible riding and rules of the road.
