(Windom, Mn.)– A two-vehicle collision late Friday afternoon on Highway 71 north of Windom claimed the lives of five people and seriously injured several others.
The Minnesota State Patrol says 67-year-old Martin Hanson of Springfield, Minnesota was driving a 2016 GMC Terrain northbound and 42-year-old Matthew Schultz of Lakefield, was driving a 2019 Ford Transit Van southbound when they collided near 240th Street. Hanson died in the crash.
49-year-old Kelly Hargus, 73-year-old Kathleen Johnson, and 73-year-old Richard Johnson…all of Jackson, also died in the crash, along with 47-year-old Lindsey Rossow of Lakefield. All were passengers in the transit van.
Schultz, along with 44-year-old Kassandra Ambrose, 19-year-old Nolan Ambrose, 20-year-old Andria Benson, 44-year-old Kristin Hanson, and 20-year-old Brett Rossow…all of Jackson…were injured in the crash along with 54-year-old Eric Rossow, 25-year-old Keylee Rossow and 23-year-old Karlee Rossow…all of Lakefield. They were also passengers in the transit van and were taken to hospitals in Redwood Falls and Windom. Kassandra Ambrose and Eric Rossow sustained life threatening injuries, according to the State Patrol. Eric Rossow was flown to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.
The Cottonwood and Redwood County Sheriff’s Offices assisted on the scene along with fire departments from Windom, Lamberton, Westbrook and Springfield. An ambulance from North Aircare also responded to the scene.
The collision took place around 4:42 pm.
***Previous story*** (Windom, Mn.)– Authorities in southwest Minnesota are investigating a fatal head-on crash that happened late Friday afternoon north of Windom, in Cottonwood county. Multiple fatalities were reported, with others seriously injured.
The Minnesota State Patrol says GMC Terrain SUV was being driven northbound by a 67-year-old man from Springfield, Minnesota and a 2019 Ford Transit van was southbound. It was being driven by a 42-year-old man from Lakefield. No names have been released yet.
Troopers say there were 12 passengers in the transit van, ranging in age from 19 to 73, all from Jackson and Lakefield.
