Aerial Seeding Along Hwy 60 Near Sibley To Start In March

November 22, 2014

(Sibley)– Aviation contractors hired by the Iowa Department of Transportation will perform aerial seeding and fertilizing along a portion of Highway 60 near Sibley perhaps as early as March.

D.O.T officials say the process helps control erosion and that it’s more efficient, due to the ability to cover vast areas over a short period of time.

They say the seed is best applied in the late winter so it will germinate in the spring.

Among the areas to be seeded is a stretch of Highway 60 in Osceola county from just south of 190th Street north to just north of 120th Street along the Sibley bypass.

Motorists can expect to see special signs, D.0.T inspectors in state vehicles, and small models of aircraft flying over the site. Planes will fly 30 to 100 feet above the ground at speeds ranging from 60 to 100 miles-per-hour.

Operations will be conducted during daylight hours on days when the wind is light.
