A Tagged Walleye Was Caught During Walleye Weekend, But…

May 04, 2026

(Spirit Lake)– The 44th Walleye Weekend is now in the books. A tagged walleye that WOULD have been $44,000 WAS caught in this year’s tournament, but there’s a bit of a snag, as Blain Andera of the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce pointed out during Sunday’s awards ceremony…

In addition, there were two people in that fishing party and they weren’t sure who actually caught the fish. Andera says contest rules prohibit team competition. Stan’s Bait and Tackle did give a consolation, prize, though, to the group.

Another tagged walleye was caught as well over the weekend, but it had last year’s tag on it.

This year’s winner of the heaviest stringer of walleye under 19 inches was Lance Christiansen of Spencer at 7.24 pounds; his wife, Lori, had the second heaviest stringer at 7.10 pounds.

And a reminder, the extended contest does continue for those who registered for that.
