Martin County Sheriff Issues Stern Warning For Anyone Who Travels When Roads Are Closed

January 14, 2021

(Fairmont, Mn.)– The sheriff in one southern Minnesota county is issuing a stern warning for anyone traveling on roads after they’ve been closed because of blizzard conditions. In an online video, Martin County Sheriff Jeffrey Markquart says you better have your wallet handy if you get stranded in that county and someone has to come get you…Martin Co Sheriff

“If you go out after roads are closed from today on or this moment on, you’ll be fined, you are possibly going to have to pay restitution on vehicles that get damaged, costs to come and get you, that kind of thing. So really think about what’s going on and how important is for you to have to go somewhere. When I say roads are closed, I apologize but we’re not going to be able to come and get everybody. I mean we’re going to do the best we can, but sometimes that just doesn’t work.”

Markquart referenced last month’s blizzard in which dozens of stranded motorists had to be rescued. He said a lot of that could have been easily avoided if people would have just stayed put after being told not to travel. He says they don’t want a repeat of that.
