Construction Of New Dickinson Co. Road Maintenance Facility On East Edge Of Spirit Lake To Continue Through Winter Months

December 21, 2020

(Spirit Lake)– Construction of a new county road maintenance facility on the east edge of Spirit Lake is continuing through the winter months. A cold snap early in the season had officials thinking about suspending the work for the season. But County Engineer Dan Eckert told the Board of Supervisors last week that’s changed…Maintenance Facility Update

“The big thing we held up on in that October time frame was the whole concrete floor. We didn’t want to put, again, the styrofoam, the plastic, the tubing and then not be able to finish the concrete because we’d have had hundreds of thousands of dollars of tubing and styrofoam, plastic, exposed for the winter. So they made some changes in design and everything else since then and we’re going to erect the building now, put the red iron steel up, and the concrete block, and then they’ll come back in and finish the concrete in the interior of the building either this winter when we’ve got heat in the building, or next summer. Probably next summer. So a lot of changes were made to be able to continue to build, to erect the building, the structure, and then the concrete will just get poured. It’s a huge concrete flooring, probably an acre, will get poured next summer while the building is up. So they made some changes to accommodate that.”

The supervisors approved a change order that will allow the work to continue under winter conditions. The increase will be covered through the million or so dollars the county saved after the bid for the project came in much below estimates.
