While Crops Are Looking Excellent Locally, There Are Issues With Some Corn Fields Off To Our West

July 08, 2020

(Lakefield, Mn.)– Recent storms packing high wind have caused some damage to corn fields in areas off to our west. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says most of that happened in portions of Nobles and Rock counties in southwest Minnesota and Lyon and Sioux counties in northwest Iowa…Lodging Corn

“It looks like it’s mainly lodging, not a lot of green snap. And I think after everybody’s experience this past year with wind damage the green snap was really just very devastating. It was just about zero as far as getting any type of ear or any yield out of any of those particular plants even if they were snapped off above the ear. Most of those is lodging so we’re hopeful that’s going to come back up. A lot of times those base roots will start working. You know that corn wants to stand up if possible and so hopefully that will happen. The biggest issue now is it’s close to pollination so we’re just concerned about if everything will stand up straight and we can still get that pollen to fall on that silk and that ear and stuff, so.”

Within the immediate area Nesseth says the crops continue to look excellent and are developing nicely.
