It Was A Very Busy 4th Of July In The Iowa Great Lakes In Spite Of A Pandemic Going On; Communication Center Reports High Call Volumes

(Spirit Lake)– Although there is a pandemic going on right now, it was still an extremely busy 4th of July in the Iowa Great Lakes.

Statistics provided by Dickinson County Emergency Management shows the volume of calls over the 4th of July weekend in the Iowa Great Lakes was up in most categories. The report shows the Communications Center received 282 911 calls, up 53 from last year. There were 711 calls for administrative service, up 34 from last year.

The Dickinson County Jail was also busy, with 30 bookings, up four from 2019.

228 traffic stops were made in the county, up 46 from last year. The Communications Center reported receiving 130 911 miss-calls or hang-ups, up 16 from 2019. There were 57 complaints related to fireworks, which was actually down five from last year. The number of medical calls was also down this year, with 25 of those reported. That’s five less than 2019. The Communications Center also received 22 calls regarding intoxicated persons, down two from last year; and 16 calls were received requesting to talk to officers, up eight from 2019.

Officials point out the statistics this year covered a four day period over the fourth compared to five days last year.

On the law enforcement side, officials say the vast majority of the arrests were related to alcohol, involving drunk driving or public intoxication. Officers and deputies also reported investigating numerous parking complaints. Most of those were in Wahpeton.
