Heat, Humidity & Occasional Rains Have Crops Thriving

July 02, 2020

(Lakefield, Mn.)– Corn won’t be knee high this year by the 4th of July. Instead, it’s more like waist to chest high in many cases. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says while all that heat and humidity may be uncomfortable for us, the corn and soybeans are loving it…Crop Development Update

“A lot of that corn out there, Steve, is you know, waist to chest high now and it’s just exploded this last week and corn and soybeans, you know, are following along nicely. You know we’ve got a lot of the beans are in that R-1 stage of starting to bloom and, you know, are getting some good plant height and you know, we’ll see some fields with a little bit of yellowing, a little bit of iron chlorosis showing up, you know, and a lot of times that will happen where you’ve got some higher PH soils and a little wetter soils. But I think that’s all going to grow out of it and we’ve got some corn on corn fields that are a little slow and look a little tough but it’s just a matter of those roots finding the nitrogen and you know we’ve had plenty of moisture so a lot of these soils have been, you know, basically saturated for quite awhile but overall, you know, it’s just a, I think we’ve just got a tremendous looking crop.”

Nesseth adds pests haven’t been too much of an issue so far, either.
