(Okoboji)-Animal experts urge extra care with Pets during the 4th of July Fireworks, KUOO’s Thoreson has details:
Animal experts are urging Pet Owners to take precautions to ensure safety of their pets during the 4th of July Holiday Weekend.
Kristi Henning, Director of the Emmet County Animal Shelter explains. “The 4th of July might be fun for some humans, and again that’s not all. A lot of humans have really a hard time with the 4th of July, but animals can’t speak for themselves, so please, please, know your pet, be their advocate, keep them safe, keep them locked in. Some tips are, use some calming agents, there’s lots of those on the market now, both medicated and natural. Make sure that you play a loud radio or TV. If you can, stay home with your pet during fireworks going off because they’ll feel safer with you in there, and if you cannot, make sure they’re locked in. No windows they can break out of, make sure that there’s no doors that they can break out of. If you want to make sure you house doesn’t get damaged because they might go into a panic, make sure that they’re in a kennel that’s secure, otherwise they’ll try to get to a place that they feel safe. They don’t understand that the fireworks aren’t going to hurt them. To them, they feel like the world is coming to an end.”
She notes that thunder shirts and other products can be helpful in calming pets.
