New Election Regulations Result In Some Districts Delaying Administering Oath Of Office To Newly Elected School Board Members

November 19, 2019

(Undated)– A change in procedure that went into effect with this year’s school board elections has resulted in a delay in some districts administering the oath of office to newly elected members.

In the Okoboji district, the newly elected members would have been sworn into office at Monday evening’s meeting. But because a portion of the district extends into Clay county, new regulations that came about with the combining of city and school elections required those residents of the Okoboji district living in Clay county to vote in Clay county. That means those results had to be certified first in Clay county, then in Dickinson county where the district is headquartered.

The same is true for the Graettinger-Terril, Harris-Lake Park, Estherville-Lincoln Central and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn districts whose boundaries also extend into neighboring counties.
