Estherville City Council Votes 6-1 To Bring Proposed Data Center Regulations To A Public Hearing

November 03, 2026

(Estherville)– Proposed data center regulations in Estherville are now headed for public comment.

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission voted last week to bring the rules to the city council, which voted this (Monday) evening to schedule a public hearing on the matter for it’s next regular meeting November 16th. The vote, however, wasn’t unanimous. Councilman David Hovenga requested it be referred back to the Planning and Zoning Commission for further review when it comes to noise, more specifically, tonal volume, or frequency…

Another council member argued any outstanding issues could still be addressed during the public hearing process…

City Administrator Penny Clayton says the November 16th hearing will be held at 5:00 pm. She says it likely will be held at a larger venue at the Estherville campus of Iowa Lakes Community College, given the large crowd that’s expected.

Path 1 Data Centers has expressed interest in building a 25 megawatt facility in an industrial park on the south side of Estherville.
