(Undated)– Saturday will start off on the wet side, but forecasters say things should be dry by the time trick or treating starts Halloween evening. That’s a far cry from 35 years ago. The Halloween Blizzard of 1991 dumped 14 inches of snow on the region, accompanied by 40 mph wind and brutally cold temperatures.
It was even worse in central Iowa, where a massive ice storm occurred, leaving some 80,000 homes without power. Damage to utilities was put at roughly $63 million, more than $250 million in today’s values.
There was also extensive crop damage as some of the harvest hadn’t been completed yet.
52 counties in Iowa were declared disaster areas.
