(Des Moines)– Iowa’s aspiring hunters get a special advantage this weekend. Youth Pheasant Season opens Saturday. It’s open to Iowa residents aged 15 and younger. They don’t need a hunting license or habitat fee, but must be accompanied by an adult with a valid license. Mick Klemmsrude is with the department of Natural Resources…
“We do put quite an effort in trying to engage the kids in giving them an opportunity to experience the hunt and learn from a licensed mentor.”
Klemesrud says their success is going to depend on several factors…
“Depending on how the harvest is going, we kind of like to have a slow harvest of the corn so can continue to get some new birds into the prairies and into the CRP fields, and some cooler weather to get birds where they should be. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Klemmsrude says it’s the 2nd highest pheasant count since 2015.
