(Lakefield, Mn.)– Ideal conditions so far this season have resulted in rapid growth and development for both corn and soybeans throughout the region. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says corn in some areas is already waist high…
“The crop is just growing along nicely and you know we’re probably not having that rapid growth we had when we had those warmer temperatures. I think it’s a nice cool down we’ve got now and we got just two, three tenths of rain here, a nice little shower of rain last night, so things just look really positive and I think most farmers are just really pleased with where we’re at with this stage in the crop growth and development and we’ve got our fingers crossed and hopefully things keep going the way they’re going.”
As far as moisture goes, Nesseth says it’s a Goldilocks type scenario: not too little and not too much…
“I think a lot of our subsoil’s gotten re-charged, you can see that with the tile running the way it is, and we don’t have an abundance of moisture so we don’t have a lot of drowned out areas. Overall we’ve just got some beautiful stands out there and I think just excellent yield potential so far.”
Nesseth says as of now there aren’t any pest concerns but he says producers will need to keep an eye out for any aphid activity in soybeans beginning in another couple of weeks or so.
