Drainage Dispute On West Side Of West Lake Okoboji Could Be Headed To Court

June 15, 2026

(Spirit Lake)– An ongoing dispute over a drainage issue in the area of the West Okoboji Harbor may be about to come to a head. Acting as drainage district trustees, the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors voted last week to hire an engineer to provide evidence that a drainage system in that area is blocked and is affecting agricultural land on the west side of Highway 86.

The recommendation to hire the engineer came from County Attorney Jon Martin. Supervisor Kim Wermersen says it’s important the county have that evidence…

“I think we’re at a standstill and I think where John is leading is that we have done everything we can with the Harbor Association. They’re ignoring us. And so I think we’re at a point where they don’t believe there’s any blockage, we show that there’s blockage. If we involve a drainage engineer to actually show that, then we have evidence to move forward if we need to.”

The drainage district will be responsible for covering the cost of the engineer’s work.
