Okoboji City Council Schedules Public Hearing For Zoning Change Request

June 10, 2026

(Okoboji)– The Okoboji City Council Tuesday set July 14th as the date for a public hearing on a re-zoning request from the Pearson Lakes Art Center. City Administrator Michael Meyers told the council the property there is currently split-zoned…

“Last year the Okoboji Summer Theatre had a very similar issue where their property, being that it’s quite large, was zoned commercial and residential back when zoning came into implementation early in the ’70’s. The zoning districts were kind of arbitrarily offset the highway by linear footage and generally didn’t follow parcel or property lines, therefore large parcels like the Summer Theatre and the Art Center were split zoned with about three fourths of it in commercial and the back quarter being single family residential.”

Meyers says the commercial designation for the entire PLAC property would allow them to construct a classroom facility in some trees behind the Art Center…

“Currently that part of the property is zoned single family residential so their request is to kind of follow the lead of the Summer Theatre and re-zone the entire parcel commercial so that they can build what they would like to do.”

Meyers says the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission considered the matter at a meeting last week.
