The Next Installment In This Summer’s Speaker’s Series At Lakeside Lab Is This (Tues.) Evening

June 09, 2026

(Wahpeton)– Around the Bend: Floating Down the Missouri River is a book written by Lisa Dill and will be the topic of the Lakeside Lab Speaker Series tonight. Dill has been teaching a creative non-fiction writing class at Iowa Lakeside Lab since 2018…

“In twenty thirteen, I went seven hundred and some miles down the Missouri River on a forty year old pontoon boat that came straight out of Miller’s Bay and wrote a book about the river. But I used the trip, the ridiculous forty year old boat trip, as a kind of framework so that people would stay interested. Spoiler alert we didn’t die. And tomorrow night, I’m going to be talking about how to write a book and I’m going to talk. I’m going to reference sort of some of the things that I did with my book. But I thought to talk about, you know, everybody constantly say to me, oh, I’ve always wanted to write a book. And so I’m going to give a talk tomorrow about why you should.”

Dill says she was basically born to be a writer…

“Because I’m the child of two writers. I was exposed early to a lot of really great books and writing, and the value of writing in lots of conversations about important, the importance of good writing and so forth. And so, of course, when I went to college, I decided I was going to major in anything but English because I was not going to be a writer, because that was what my parents were. And I was never going to be like that.”

You can hear Dill talk about her book and share how you can become a writer tonight at the Iowa Lakeside Lab Speaker Series. It is held in Mahan Hall every Tuesday at 7:00 on the Iowa Lakeside Lab campus in Whapeton. For more info go to iowalakesidelab.org for more info.
