Westport School House To Open For Another Season

June 08, 2026

(Okoboji)– Dickinson county’s last remaining one room school house will once again be open to visitors this summer. Amy Heibult, Community Relations Director for the Dickinson County Conservation Board, says the Westport Schoolhouse at Kenue Park, just west of the Nature Center and Maser Monarch Lodge, will open for the season Tuesday, June 9th…

“This schoolhouse was actually brought over in 1995. It’s over a century year old and it has some really cool artifacts inside, some of which are original to the building, others that have been added through generous donors and grants over the years here. Visitors can come in and sit in the school desks. They can also write on the chalk slate and the chalk board. They can also ring the school bell when they come in, and we also have docents in the building to give short tours, answer questions, and tell a little bit more about the history of the building to visitors.”

She adds the building recently got a bit of a facelift…

“It was just painted last year with a fresh coat of paint so we’re trying to take care of it as best we can and continue sharing about the past and what school life was like.”

The Westport Schoolhouse will be open daily Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm through the end of August.
