Careless Use Of Bicycles, Scooters & E-Bikes Causing Concern

May 30, 2026

(Milford)– The Milford Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies throughout the region, continue to receive complaints over the careless use of bicycles, scooters and e-bikes.

In Milford, police say the city, and the state of Iowa, have ordinances in place regulating scooters and bicycles and the State Of Iowa. Police Chief Shilo Brevik says the devices are not allowed at all on sidewalks in the downtown area or city parks. In areas of Milford where they CAN be operated on sidewalks, Brevik says they must be operated safely and within parameters of the law, adding they must follow traffic laws and yield to pedestrians and bicycles.

Brevik adds that if the device does NOT have pedals, it is NOT considered as an e-bike and illegal to be operated other than on private property. In addition, if the e-bike is more than 750 watts it is NOT considered a bicycle and can NOT be operated outside of public property.

Brevik urges parents to visit with their children about rules and laws and to ensure their devices are legal.
