ILCC To Hold Special Program On Parkinson’s Disease

May 05, 2026

(Emmetsburg)– Parkinson’s Disease, A Mental Health Approach will be held on May 7th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on the Iowa Lakes Emmetsburg Campus. Chantel Teeter, who is the Director of Allied Health and Workforce Education at Iowa Lakes, talks about what the session will cover…

“This presentation is going to touch on some of the signs and symptoms and things that happen to people with Parkinson’s disease. It’s also going to touch on how it impacts not only their physical health, but their mental health. It’s going to touch a little bit on some of the current treatments that are being used with Parkinson’s disease is also some of the things that daily caregivers can kind of use to help care for those, because quite often with these people, it’s their family and friends that are closest to them at home that are providing a lot of care. And so it’s going to touch on some things that would be beneficial for them as well.”

Dr. Martha Olson will be the presenter and Teeter says Dr. Olson is very knowledgeable in this area…

“Dr. Martha is actually one of our nursing faculty right here at Iowa Lakes. She’s been with us for quite a while, but along with that, she’s continued her education and done some additional extensive training and research education with Parkinson’s disease. She’s been able to be involved in some training at some places where they really only accept a very few number of people for each session, and she has had an opportunity to do that. So she has some extensive hands-on learning and with some of these treatments with Parkinson’s. And so we’re very fortunate to have her right here in our local community to be able to share some of that firsthand knowledge.”

The course is intended for healthcare professionals seeking continuing education hours as well as caregivers, family members, those diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease as well as anyone who wants to learn more about this disease. Cost is $10 for the public and $49 for healthcare professionals. You can get more information by calling 800-252-5664.
