(Spirit Lake)– A collision late Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Highway 9 and 219th Avenue near Indian Hills on the west edge of Spirit Lake sent one person to the hospital.
The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says 69-year-old Michael Elgersma of Spirit Lake was driving a 2009 Ford Explorer eastbound and 63-year-old Lawrence Johnson of Worthing, South Dakota was driving a 2020 Freightliner semi tractor/trailer. Deputies say Johnson was crossing the eastbound lane from 219th Avenue to turn west onto Highway 9 when the collision occurred.
Elgersma was taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare with non-incapacitating injuries; no injuries were reported to Johnson.
The vehicle driven by Elgersma was totaled; about $4,000 in damage was estimated to the semi trailer. Authorities say the collision remains under investigation. It happened a little after 4:00 pm Wednesday.
The Spirit Lake Police Department, Lakes Regional Healthcare Ambulance, Spirit Lake First Responders, Spirit Lake Fire Department and Jennings Tow and Repair assisted on the scene. The Lakes Area Extrication Unit was also initially called to the scene, but was disregarded a short time later.
