(Lakefield, Mn.)– We are now just weeks away from most of the corn crop in the region reaching maturity. That word from Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield…
“We’ll start seeing some black layering probably, I would say, mid-September. Just depending on planting date and variety and maturity of the corn. It’s coming along nicely so I think all-in-all this corn crop looks like it could be really outstanding.”
Nesseth says they do continue to see some indications of fungal diseases but nothing severe or widespread. He says sudden death syndrome is continuing to show up in some soybean fields…
“It’s going to affect some yield. I don’t think really significant in our particular area but we could ding some of these yields five, 10 percent in yield and we’ll just have to wait and see. But again the crop is progressing nicely so the later this disease shows up the better off we are.”
He says some of the earlier planted beans are close to maturing…
“Some beans are probably at or getting close to R-6, especially the early planted beans, and I think, you know, it’s going to be an early harvest unless we get substantial rain in September. I think most producers are just worried it’s going to continue to rain and you know, we’re not far away from silage chopping and we just hope things will kind of dry up a little bit now and the ground conditions will be good enough so we can get in there and harvest when that crop is ready.”
Nesseth says there has been some further aphid activity in some soybean fields but he says it’s somewhat spotty.
