Tentative Agreement Reached Over Orleans Sewer Issue

June 12, 2025

(Orleans)– Meeting in special session this (Thurs.) afternoon, the Orleans City Council voted 5-0 in favor of a change order for the reconstruction of 140th Street between Peoria and Hill Avenue. It reflects an additional cost in the project of nearly $606,000 to replace a sanitary sewer main and service connections. Mayor Bill Maas says the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District has agreed to reimburse a major part of that cost to the city…

“Those figures may alternate back and forth but it does sound like most of that will be taken care of. I mean they’ve, the board of trustees of the Sanitary Sewer District have gone to great lengths already to try to make that happen for us and we’re very hopeful that this is the way it’s going to come down.”

Maas expressed his gratitude to the Sanitary District Board of Trustees for the agreement, which is still pending legal approval…

“I can’t say enough good things about that board. They kind of renewed my faith in cooperativeness around the lakes here and I’ve always thought this is one of the best places to live and I think this is one of the factors yesterday that, showing their interest and knowing that ultimately, you know, kind of it’s their responsibility and willing to rearrange their budget and do whatever they can to help us out.”

As we reported previously it was recently discovered the lines were much more shallow than first thought and would interfere with a new storm sewer that’s being constructed as part of the road project. Some water service lines also need to be lowered. The discovery brought the project basically to a standstill. Maas says they can now once again move forward.
