Ag Expert: The Rain & Pace At Which It Fell Was Extremely Beneficial

May 21, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Lakefield, Mn.)– Area farmers say the recent rain will be extremely beneficial as crops continue to emerge. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services of Lakefield adds that for the most part, the majority of that rain came at nice, steady pace and soaked in nicely…

“We didn’t get really hard rains out of it. There was a couple of showers or two that came down pretty good but overall it’s been a nice slow, steady rain and everything’s soaking up good. Our surface area was pretty dry and a few places where you had some crusting and so this has really helped get some good stand establishment for both the corn and soybeans.”

As we reported earlier, some of that rain was accompanied in some areas by strong wind. Nesseth says there are some small, fairly isolated areas where that caused some issues with stands…

“It just depends on kind of where that, how that slope was and what type of soil texture you have there. So we’re spiking in in some areas where we’ve got some lower stands and in a few cases we’ve had to tear up a field or two of corn and re-plant, but overall most everything has survived really good and when you look at and evaluate stand establishment throughout our area it’s just excellent. We’re really shaping up, especially with this rain now and those early planting dates, we’re shaping up for a really good year if we continue to get some timely rainfall.”

Nesseth says we can expect to see a lot of hay cutting going on as soon as things dry out once again.
