(Lakefield, Mn.)– Ideal weather has allowed most producers in the region to complete corn and soybean planting, well ahead of the pace from a year ago. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield estimates about 95 percent of the crops are in the ground, with quite a few of them emerging.
While the spring overall has been ideal when it comes to conditions, Nesseth says there have been some isolated cases where small areas of soybeans had to be re-planted…
“In some places we’re struggling with some soybeans and so in some of those thinner areas we’re doing some re-plants. We’re just spiking in some 80 to maybe 100,000 soybean seeds and doing that kind of at an angle and just kind of even out some of those stands and populations in some of those soybean fields. But overall Steve, just excellent, excellent conditions and we’re way ahead of the game especially when you compare it with last year. It’s like night and day.”
Nesseth adds the rain that’s in the forecast would also be ideal…
“If we could get an inch of rain here, you know, in the next day or two, and some of that is maybe forecasted, I sure hope we can get it. That would just be excellent. That would really help with some of these fields that are crusted, soften up that soil and just help with getting those plants emerged.”
Nesseth says the first cutting of alfalfa is underway right now with excellent quality and volume.
