Corn & Soybean Planting Kicking Into High Gear; Conditions Said To Be Ideal

April 16, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Lakefield, Mn.)– Corn and soybean planting is in high gear across the region. That word from Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services of Lakefield…

“You know quite a few beans in the ground and a lot of guys are going on corn and yeah, it looks like it’s going to turn out to be a pretty good spring so far. Field conditions are just awesome. They’re just really mellow, working up nice. No real wet spots so everybody’s been able to go from one end of the field to the other and it’s going to make a really good seedbed.”

Nesseth says there’s also good news for alfalfa fields. He says there earlier had been concern over some die off due to a lack of snow this past winter, but he says those fields are greening up nicely…

“You know alfalfa is an expensive input, you know, the seed is, and so if we can avoid having to tear up some alfalfa fields that’s a plus. And sometimes you have to inner seed some grass in there but overall it looks like things are shaping up pretty nicely there.”

And with all the activity in the fields, Nesseth reminds producers and motorists to be safe with all the slow moving equipment on the roads…

“There’s a lot of big equipment there, you know, moving from one field to the other. You’ve just got to give them room, slow down, and just be aware that they’re probably going to turn into some field approach or maybe make a turn. So yeah, big equipment out there so just be careful.”

Nesseth says for the most part, soil temperatures are hovering right around 50 degrees, which is ideal for planting.
