(Spencer)– The city of Spencer has been denied funding through FEMA to replace its wastewater treatment facility damaged in last year’s flood. City Manager Kevin Robinson made the announcement at Monday’s City Council meeting…
“And now we’ll move forward into the analysis and discussion of how to repair, what to repair, how much we want to update. All systems are functioning normally currently but they could be improved from the damage from the flood. We’ll be doing a comprehensive scan. I’m recommending to the council to fund a comprehensive scan of the collection system on the storm side and the sanitary side that was impacted by the disaster. Just for perspective that’s about 70 percent of the town. We’ll be presenting a plan to do a facilities study on the wastewater treatment plant as well as a comprehensive plan for all of the lift stations. The lift stations are several decades old. So we have that preliminary data but now we know we can move forward. FEMA’s given us some guidance on that.”
Similar to previous years, Robinson says city crews have once again been cleaning out intakes throughout the city this spring. He encourages residents who see plugged intakes or witness areas of standing water to contact city hall.
City officials are also looking into possible options to try to prevent river water from entering the storm sewer system when the levels are high.
Another community informational meeting on last year’s disaster is scheduled for May 7th at a time and location to be determined.
