Local Group Advocating For Unified Shoreline Ordinance

April 03, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– A move may be afoot for a unified shoreline ordinance in Dickinson county. Supervisor Steve Clark represents the Board of Supervisors on the Dickinson County Cleanwater Alliance. Speaking at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, Clark said there’s been some preliminary discussion along that line…

“They’d like to see unified zoning on all of the municipalities and the county on all of the lakes so that between the set back for housing and the high water mark there’s kind of a unified plan so that, especially landscapers and contractors that will be working in that area, don’t have to go to so many different zoning boards to try to get this figured out what they can do and what they should do and what’s allowed and what’s not.”

The discussion stems from last year’s flood that resulted in multiple, massive shoreline collapses around the Iowa Great Lakes. Currently, each city, along with the county, have their own shoreline zoning ordinances which have wide variations from one jurisdiction to the other. Officials say that’s causing confusion and frustration among property owners trying to make repairs.
