Severe Weather Awareness Week In Iowa Is Wrapping Up

March 28, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa concludes today (Fri.) with the topic being flood safety. Dickinson County Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Ehret says it needs to be on the top of our minds, especially after what happened in the region in June of last year…

“We had multiple issues last June with people trying to drive through standing water or deep water and cars got stalled out. We had numerous water rescues during that heavy rain event. Again, they always say turn around, don’t drown and that’s the message I’ll put forward here is the same thing. You don’t know how deep that water is and especially if it’s moving it can carry your vehicle away, or has the potential to. So if you come across a flooded road, just turn around, go the other way, find another way to get to your destination. It’s better to be safe than sorry.”

And a reminder of the annual storm spotter class put on by the National Weather Service. It will be held this coming Thursday, April 3rd, at 7:00 pm at the Milford Fire Station.

***UPDATE: KUOO news learned late Friday afternoon the National Weather Service has canceled to the storm spotter class***
