Sanborn Savings Bank Robber Sentenced

February 27, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Sioux City)– A Chicago, Illinois man charged with robbing a northwest Iowa bank has been sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison. 40-year-old Del Evans, Jr. was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court after pleading guilty on September 4th, 2024 to bank robbery.

Evans was charged in the January 22nd, 2024 robbery of the Sanborn Savings Bank in Sanborn, Iowa. Evidence revealed that Evans walked into the bank around 1:00 pm that afternoon and handed the teller a note demanding money. Evans got the cash and fled on foot. Officers identified Evans through surveillance video and located him at his residence nearby. He peacefully surrendered after a perimeter was established around his house. A search warrant was executed resulting in authorities finding the stolen cash, the clothing he was wearing at the time and the torn-up note in the bathroom trash.

Federal prosecutors say Evans has been convicted of four armed robberies and four unarmed robberies and an attempted robbery, not including the one in Sanborn. He was on supervised release at the time of the Sanborn incident for a bank robbery spree in 2014.
