Tourism Officials Gearing Up For Busy Fall Season

September 18, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Des Moines)– Some of Iowa’s tourists spots will be getting into the Halloween spirit soon. Jessica O’Riley is with the Iowa Tourism Office…

“We have a few itineraries that mix some key locations with distilleries across the state.

And with Halloween just around the corner, O’Riley says there’s one destination in particular you might want to check out…and it’s right here in northwest Iowa. The American Theatre in Cherokee is said by some to be haunted…

“People have reported everything from a door opening and closing on its own, are feeling chills, or hearing children laugh and playing with toys in empty rooms. You can take tours during the day or if you’re brave enough, you can make a reservation to spend the night.”

O’Riley says her office is downplaying the myth that tourism slows down in the fall…

“Yeah, it’s surprising how close, really, summer and fall are. Fall is a very big season in Iowa.”

And of course there’s a lot to see and do this fall right here in the Iowa Great Lakes, with Oktoberfest coming up the last weekend of this month.

Local tourism officials say the Iowa Great Lakes offer a great vista of fall color and that the extensive network of recreational trails present special opportunities to enjoy that firsthand.
