(Lake Park)– Voters in the Harris-Lake Park Community School District head to the polls Tuesday to consider designated uses of funds from a state sales tax for schools. Superintendent Gary Richardson says voters need to reauthorize the intended use of those funds which are earmarked for capital improvements…
“Which has through the years funded approximately four and-a-half million dollars for key infrastructure projects that are things like that the addition to the middle school-high school in 2014, all of our leasing for laptop computers is done through this, our transportation leasing is done through these funds as well. We also annually have mechanical and electrical systems maintenance and repair that we use as well as some roofing projects, classroom flooring, classroom equipment and copiers and those types of things. So it’s not a request to raise taxes, it’s not a request to raise the sales tax. Only the Legislature can do that.”
Richardson says the revenue would also help out with the district’s construction project…
“As far as not knowing the cost of the demolition. So this would allow us some flexibility in those dollars because the approximate cost for that would be $650,000, so. We don’t want to take away half of our capital projects budget for the demolition. We’d like to have some flexibility and safe keeping just in case anything might happen.”
HLP voters also Tuesday will vote on a district director’s seat. Kayla Updike was appointed to fill a vacancy earlier this summer. She is now officially running for the position.
Polls for Tuesday’s election will be open from 7:00 am until 8:00 pm. The polling site is the Lake Park Community Center.
