Playground At Kiwanis Park In Spirit Lake Undergoing Improvements

August 29, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Some improvements are being made to a playground at a heavily used park in Spirit Lake. City Attorney-Administrator Gregg Owens says some new playground equipment will be installed in coming days at Kiwanis Park…

“Earlier this year the Street Superintendent had all of the parks looked at in a routine way from a safety point of view. Some of the equipment at Kiwanis Park had been repaired in the past and it was determined that some of the climbing equipment and some of the other equipment there was beyond repair and so the city ordered new equipment to replace that. That order was made quite awhile ago but with supply issues and other things, and we got competitive quotes, of course, but there was no way for anybody to get us equipment before the end of the summer basically. But the good news is it’s been shipped, it’s on its way and we would expect to have the new equipment in place and Kiwanis Park back the way it was for people to enjoy at least of the fall, hopefully shortly after Labor Day.”

Owens says Kiwanis Park is one of the busiest parks in the city…

“Based on the inquiries we’ve had about when that would be replaced, I think that park gets a lot more use and is a lot more popular than people know. Whether it’s the proximity to the trail or a quiet spot. We’ve also had interest in the Kiwanis Club, who is the impetus for getting that park done in the first place, will be helping in some way when that equipment gets installed.”

Kiwanis Park is located on 23rd Street between Keokuk and Lincoln Avenue in Spirit Lake, just across the street from a major trailhead on the Dickinson County Trails System.
