Beginning Today (Tues. Aug. 27th) Iowa Voters Can Request Absentee Ballots For General Election

August 27, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Starting today (Tues.) Iowans can request absentee ballots for the general election. Jordan Moyer oversees elections for the Dickinson County Auditor’s Office. She says it’s easy to get a request form…

“They are on the Dickinson County Iowa, Iowa is spelled out, dot-gov website. It is on the main page, you scroll down to the bottom you’ll see 2024 general election absentee request form and you can print that off. You can either bring that into our office or you can mail that in.”

Moyer says it will still be several weeks, yet, before they can mail the ballots out…

“The earliest day that we can send out a ballot by mail is October 16th and the last day to request is October 21st. Unfortunately if we do receive that request anytime after October 21st we will not be able to mail that out.”

As a result, Moyer says to be on the safe side, it’s good to get that request in now.

Meanwhile, she adds they’ve been getting questions from people about their registration status…

“You can actually go on to the Secretary of State’s website. When you type that in you go on the right side it will say am I registered to vote, and you can check that there if you are registered. The only way you are made inactive is if you did not vote in the last general election which would have been in November of 2022. As long as you have voted since then you would still be active in our system. We do have an easy process though that if you do think you are inactive you can check that, again on the website. You can also go on there and re-register to vote which automatically comes into my system.”

In-person absentee voting gets underway October 16th. Moyer says that will once again be taking place in the supervisor’s meeting room at the Dickinson County Courthouse.
