(Undated)– School districts are making changes to their student absentee policies in accordance with a new Iowa law. Senate File 2435 defines chronic absenteeism as missing 10 percent of days within a grading period. It also defines missing more than 20 percent of days in a semester as truancy.
After 10 days a family receives a certified letter from the district which also notifies the County Attorney. After missing 20 days a family would receive a misdemeanor charge.
