U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley Visits Spirit Lake

August 19, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley made a stop today (Mon.) at Rosenboom’s in Spirit Lake as part of his annual tour of Iowa’s 99 counties. Grassley tells KUOO news he heard a lot of concerns during his visit here about regulatory issues, especially when it comes to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA…

“I think that probably OSHA and EPA and the IRS scares more Americans than anything else in the federal government. If you were running a business and you had somebody from OSHA walk in to your business, particularly under this Democrat administration, you’d probably expect that whatever they find that they don’t like that they think is unsafe for workers, you’re probably going to end up paying some sort of a fine because it seems like hardly any business gets visited without ending up with a fine of some sort. I suppose sometimes there’s something that’s really dangerous but I hear mostly about things that are ridiculous write-ups that OSHA employees give to small business.”

Grassley also mentioned some priority issues he hopes the U.S. Senate takes up when Congress reconvenes in a couple of weeks…

“I’m not sure this is going to happen but number one ought to be a five-year Farm Bill. I’m sure that’s not going to happen. The second one would be the appropriations committees have put out all 12 of appropriations bills out of both the House and Senate and surely Shumer ought to bring up at least two or three of those that we could get done over the three weeks that we’re in in September. But last year he only brought up one and that was all that he did and then at Christmas time just as we were ready to adjourn for Christmas, he wants to pass some great big appropriation bill because that gives him a lot of power to do things that otherwise wouldn’t get done. That’s why I hope we’re going to reactivate the appropriation process as it existed through most of my years in Congress when you pass 12 separate appropriation bills.”

Grassley says passage of the Defense Authorization Bill, or NDA, should also be a priority.
