Housing Options Becoming Available For Spencer Residents Impacted In June Flood

August 16, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Spencer residents impacted by the June flood were updated at a meeting Wednesday evening on what’s being done to meet housing needs. A large number of homes were severely impacted by the flooding, with a number of them no longer habitable. City officials say two housing programs are being offered. 80 trailers were recently delivered by the state to the Clay County Fairgrounds, however Deputy City Manager Kevin Robinson says those are strictly short term solutions as the trailers aren’t winterized…

“Everybody’s a little different. Sometimes they’re waiting for a furnace in their house, sometimes they’re waiting for a total remodel, sometimes they might be a renter who’s totally displaced and having to wait for the landlord to re-do the property. And so as we move forward everybody’s situation will be re-evaluated, not by us, but by FEMA and the state every 30 days.”

Meanwhile, FEMA representatives are doing site surveys in Spencer for two to three bedroom units that would provide housing for up to 18 months.

City officials say they’re also gauging the impact on renters as Robinson mentioned…

“We thing that there’s roughly 400 plus properties that were rental units representing about 800 and some units, so we think somewhere between 1,200 and 1,800 renters were impacted. And so we’re trying as fast as we can to get those folks connected to stay in the community through the Temporary Housing Program and we’ve asked the state of Iowa for a rental assistance program for rental property owners.”

City officials say they may start to get at least some idea on the impact the flood has had on Spencer’s population through school registration numbers.
