Spencer Schools Ready For First Day Of Classes But There Will Be Some Changes

August 13, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Officials with Spencer Community Schools say they’re ready for the start of classes in a little more than a week, even though flooding damaged several buildings. One of those, Lincoln Elementary, was heavily damaged and won’t be usable in the upcoming school year, displacing about 450 students and 50 staff members. Third grade classes will be moved to Fairview Elementary; 4th grade to Johnson Elementary and 5th grade will go to the Middle School. Superintendent Terry Heman tells news partner KTIV while there’s going to be some big changes, they’re confident it will work out…

“We’re fortunate we have a little bit of room in each of those buildings and the principals have done a really good job of finding the space for all of our staff that will be with them for the year.”

Hemann says their goal for the upcoming school year is this…

“We’re trying to make our students school experience as close to normal as we can. They need normal and a lot of our kids have been through a lot this summer. They may have lost their bedroom. They may have lost their home, and they may be living somewhere else. So, you know, what we can do at school is provide them with as close to normal as we can.”

The first day of classes in the Spencer School District is August 23rd.
