Overnight Thunderstorms Produce Damaging Wind In Portions Of NW Iowa

July 30, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Storm Lake)– Strong to severe thunderstorms that moved through portions of northwest Iowa overnight and very early this (Tues.) morning produced damaging wind. Peter Rogers is a warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls…

“There has been quite a bit of reported tree damage and power outages across several communities in northwest Iowa from Sioux City into Plymouth, Cherokee counties. We have seen widespread reports of winds in that 60 to 70 mph range across northwest Iowa resulting in those downed trees and power lines. In particular we’ve heard that the Sioux City area was hit particularly hard as well as Le Mars and Aurelia have had quite a bit of tree damage as well.”

Storm Lake recorded a 56 mph gust, just shy of the 58 mph threshold required for a severe thunderstorm warning to be issued.
