Cherokee County Emergency Management Gives Update On Flood Recovery

July 25, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Cherokee)– Another northwest Iowa community heavily impacted by last month’s flood is Cherokee. Cherokee County Emergency Management Coordinator Justin Pritts says a number of people in that county were displaced…

“Overall we did have 120 houses totally affected. Of that 120 we ended up with 39 that had major damage and we had 19 that had what is considered catastrophic damage, or destroyed. So as far as operations of the city are concerned, yes, we’re pretty much back to normal but we absolutely have residents that are struggling as far as getting help and getting some sort of normalcy back, yes.”

Pritts says efforts to bring in temporary housing are kicking into high gear now that public assistance for the flood event has been approved for Cherokee county.

Pritts adds Cherokee county is pleased over the formation of the committee that’s looking into flood mitigation along the upper reaches of the Little Sioux River…

“The important part for us is we just want to stay informed. It certainly sounded like the group today has everybody’s best interest at heart and I believe as long as communication is shared and information comes down the pipe, I think everything’s going to work out just fine. A lot of good ideas here today.”

Pritts made the comments following Tuesday’s committee meeting in Spirit Lake.
