Pearson Lakes Art Center to present The Day the Music Died: The Story of Don McLean’s American Pie on Thursday, May 16

(Okoboji)-There’s a special film on tap Thursday night. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

Pearson Lakes Art Center will present The Day The Music Died: The Story of Don McLean’s American Pie Thursday evening.

Connie Valens, sister of Richie Valens, appears in the film. “I was in Clear Lake and somebody said, hey – are you available to come down, and there happened to be a car show and they said we’d just like you to walk around the cars because we’re trying to show that era, and of course there were all the beautiful vintage cars there. It just kind of snowballed, one thing turned into another. So, they invited me back for some shooting at The Surf Ballroom and then again the evening of Don’s concert which was, I believe, February 3rd, 2021. I don’t want to give it all away but, I’m there with him in the Green Room and that’s the first time we meet and it was pretty special.”

She adds that it’s one of her favorite documentaries. “If you love film, and I do, it takes you back to familiar places that were even favorite places that you’ve forgotten about, and the sounds and what you’re seeing and how he put it together. I mean, I like documentaries, especially music and I’ve watched a lot of good film, and I’m going to tell you what, this is up there in the top five.”

The film will start at 7 o’clock Thursday night.
