Bur Oak Blight Results In Loss Of Two Trees At Preservation Plaza

May 01, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Arnolds Park)– Officials with the Arnolds Park Amusement Park say they’ve had to remove two diseased bur oak trees at Preservation Plaza. In a Facebook post, CEO Jon Pausley says the trees were suffering heavily from what’s known as “bur oak blight”…

“Now all of these trees are inside of an Iowa Natural Heritage conservation easement outside here at Preservation Plaza that was a gift from the Andrea Waitt Carlton Family Foundation a few decades ago, so we want to conserve all the time as much as we can. So while two trees are coming down, two of the same type of bur oak trees are going to be re-planted a little further up in Preservation Plaza in a couple of weeks, and the rest of the trees on Preservation Plaza that have blight and then also on the beach over here, are going to be receiving a blight treatment over the next few weeks.”

Pausley adds that they’re very sensitive to the removal of trees, especially bur oaks, but he says the ones that were cut down were beyond the stage for effective treatment.
