(Montgomery)– Several Dickinson county fire departments were called to a fire this (Monday) evening in a junk yard on the west side of Montgomery. Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly…
“It was about 7:30 when we got the call. We had a box truck on fire out in the junk yard and it spread to a bunch of other vehicles. Fortunately we kept it out of the quonset building. We had some pretty big fire. We called Lake Park in for tankers, we turned around and we called Milford in for tankers.”
At the onset flames from the fire could be seen from as far away as Highway 9. Daly says they were concerned over the potential for the fire to spread quickly given the conditions that currently exist…
“Yeah, that was a big concern. We didn’t need it jumping. That’s why we got a couple of grass trucks out here just in case, that way if we did have something going across the field we could get the grass trucks out there to get it, so.”
He says the cause of the fire is uncertain…
“It could be just about anything. You know how it is in a junk yard. You know it could have been a piece of glass that laid there. It got 70 some degrees today. We could have had something from that. Who knows.”
An ambulance and paramedics from Lakes Regional Healthcare also responded. Daly says one firefighter was treated for a minor heat-related issue.
As of now, Daly says there hasn’t been any talk of a burn ban yet in Dickinson county…
“We’ve only had two or three calls so far. We have a chief’s meeting at the end of the month. We’ll probably talk about if if not sooner, we’ll probably talk about it at the chief’s meeting.”
Burn bans are currently in place in Emmet and Palo Alto counties.
