(Spencer)– A former instructor with the Spencer School District has agreed to having her license suspended after being accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student. Online documents state that on November 30, 2021, the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners received a complaint against Katherine Kardell. On June 24th, 2022, the board found probable cause to hold a hearing on the matter.
Kardell was accused of committing or soliciting sexual conduct, or soliciting, encouraging or consummating a romantic relationship with a student through text messages and embraces.
Kardell claimed the contact was never inappropriate but agreed that if the case went to a hearing, there would be enough evidence to support a finding she violated the Standards of Professional Conduct and Ethics. She then agreed to have her license suspended for three years and will receive a public reprimand. The agreement also removed any mention of sexual conduct. Kardell also agreed to complete 15 hours worth of education in the “Ethics for Educators” program through the Iowa State Education Association and will undergo a mental health evaluation.
Kardell’s suspension was backdated to December 1st, 2021. Once it expires, she will be eligible to reapply for a license. Kardell resigned from the Spencer Community Schools on November 19th, 2021.
