Vast Improvements Planned For A Dickinson County Trails Access/Parking Area

February 09, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Arnolds Park)– Some improvements are coming to a heavily used access on the Dickinson County Trails system. Erin Reed of Dickinson County Trails says a major revamping will be done this spring on the trail head on 202nd Street just south of the Emerald Hills Golf Course…

“So what we’re going to do is remove the pavement that’s in rough shape right now and we’re going to straighten it out because right now it curves around the parking lot down there, and then we’re going to send it straight through and then flip the parking lot over to the east side of the trail and that will improve the parking situation and open up to the land that is to the east of the trail that the Dickinson County Conservation owns and manages. So hopefully we can make some improvements at that park eventually and just really create a better situation for everybody as far as parking and access to the trail.”

She says some signage will also be installed to make the crossing more visible…

“We’re looking at putting in bike crossing signs and doing a cross walk at that location so that it’s more visible. With the campground over there and the growth that’s gone on there’s a lot more traffic happening in the summer time, especially, so it will be good to get that to be more visible.”

The work is scheduled for this upcoming season, with a completion date of June 30th.

Reed says some other major projects are in the works for the trails system in the upcoming season, including the final segment of the Ta Tonka Ska Trace trail connecting Spirit Lake with Lake Park…

“We’re working with the D.O.T with federal funds on it, so that slows things down a little bit. And the D.O.T is waiting on getting the letting date for that, so we’re looking at May right now for that and hopefully we can get it started this fall or late summer.”

The estimated cost to complete the final 2.5 mile segment is about $1.4 million.

Reed adds work on the first phase of the Clay county connector trail from Milford south is going to be pushed back…

“We’ve run into a few route issues with that piece so we’re still contemplating exactly what we’re going to do with that. Now at this point it definitely will be 2024 before we start that construction.”

Reed presented her annual report at Wednesday’s Arnolds Park City Council meeting.
