Clay Co. Fair Powered By SMU Will Once Again Feature A Plethora Of 4-H & Youth Activities

August 24, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– This year’s Clay County Fair Powered by SMU will once again include a plethora of activities for youth. Jenna Steffen, Youth Coordinator for Clay County ISU Extension and Outreach says most of those will be taking place on the weekends of the fair. She says it starts September 10th with working exhibits from 11:00 am until 12 Noon with a fashion show and a cupcake competition that afternoon. Steffen says another highlight, a manufacturing expo, will be held Friday, September 16 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at the 4-H Auditorium…

“We pull in a lot of manufacturers from around northwest Iowa to come bring some hands-on experience. It’s really geared for kids in about 5th through 12th grade to kind of get some hands-on experience and learn a little bit more about what northwest Iowa has to offer in terms of manufacturing if that’s a job they’re interested in learning more about, can come to the auditorium anytime and check those out on September 16th. We’ll have some hands-on STEM activities in the exhibit building that day and we’re going to have a stuffed animal pet show for the little kids, so we want to make sure we get those younger kids involved too, and so we’re super excited about bringing that back.”

She says more STEM activities are planned for Saturday, September 17th at the fair…

“This is in partnership with the Clay County Fair and Iowa Lakes and we will be hosting a Science Saturday kind of across the fairgrounds. We’re going to have a ton of cool STEM activities, things for kids to try. Iowa Lakes is bringing some drones and some fun stuff to play with, and so we are going to have a ton of events. Just be on the lookout for that all over the fairgrounds.”

Steffen also reminds everyone to check out all of the static 4-H exhibits. She says an achievement day was held for Clay County 4-Her’s on July 20th when the state fair exhibits were selected. She says those will be back on display during the fair itself…

“All of those projects will come back to the exhibit building on the fairgrounds in September and we’ll have a few more projects, too, if kids didn’t get in that July deadline. We have some kids who do projects throughout August and they can bring those and have those judged as well. So we will have a ton of really cool projects in our building this year, so we would definitely encourage people to get to the 4-H exhibit building and check those out.”

Steffen adds the “Bucket of Junk” contest will be returning this year as well.
