Spencer City Council Authorizes Land Purchase In North Y Area For Future Development

August 16, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– The Spencer City Council Monday evening authorized the purchase of some land on the city’s north side for future development. City Manager Dan Gifford told the council it would result in a major renovation in that area of Spencer…

“This is a purchase of 40 plus acres on the east side of ’71 up by the North Y. The idea is to open that area up for economic development and build street, water and sewer into that area. We’ve heard from at least one current business that would like to hook up to sewer along that corridor and some other potential development opportunities, and we really think this will open up the north end and be a pretty good asset for the city of Spencer, at least coming in from the north corridor, so.”

Councilman Loren Reit says it’s something long overdue for the north side of Spencer…

“Spencer’s been looking like that probably since about 1972, and we have a chance with the landowner to, finally got a chance with the landowner to commit to buying that property. Some of the initial plans with streets connecting to ’71, for additional businesses. I think this is going to be incredible what could be going in on the north end of Spencer. There’s been a lot of talk, some of it very serious talk, with the Kwik Star people in addition to a couple of other businesses that have been waiting for this to happen but they needed sewer. We’ve been working with our friends at SMU on the water, on the electrical side and looking at the sewer side, so.”

City officials say the land acquisition and infrastructure will be funded by tax increment financing.

Gifford says survey work will start this fall once the crops are out of the ground. The city takes possession of the land October 15th.
