Spencer City Council Addresses Stand Up Scooters

July 07, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– There was some discussion at the Spencer City Council meeting this week regarding the operation of stand up scooters in the city. City Manager Dan Gifford says a company has expressed interest in renting scooters in Spencer. He says they haven’t yet mentioned any specific area of the city they’re interested in…

“They would experiment at first. So they’re going to guess where they think people will be going from and to and do it there and see what sort of service, ridership, they get and then move them around accordingly.”

Councilman Tom Nelson owns a business on Grand Avenue. He said he’s concerned over the possibility of scooters being operated on sidewalks…

“I get people all the time that walk out my door, including myself, and just about get wiped out by bikes. So I hate to see this, you know, it’s going to be the same thing.”

The council Tuesday unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance regulating the use of scooters in the city. It will come back for subsequent readings prior to any final adoption.
