City Officials In Spirit Lake Remind Residents It’s Illegal To Shoot Off Fireworks In City Limits

June 29, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– It may be legal to buy fireworks in Spirit Lake, but it is illegal to shoot them off in the city. That message from Police Chief Shane Brevik…

“Unlike years past we do not allow the use of fireworks in the city limits whatsoever, so. We tried that several years ago; it’s not the case any more. We ask that nobody uses them within the city limits. I believe there may be other jurisdictions that you can, but not in the city limits of Spirit Lake.”

Anyone caught shooting off fireworks on private property will be subject to a minimum fine of $250; on public property the minimum fine is $500. The potential maximum fine on misdemeanors is $855. The Spirit Lake city ordinance also states that property owners are subject to a fine of up to $855 for any illegal use of fireworks on their property by others.

Brevik adds there will be additional officers on duty over the holiday period…

“We’ll have extra guys out all weekend long to help with the influx of people along with what we project to be an increase in calls and just an increase load, so.”

The same goes for other agencies throughout the region.
